Tottenham Hotspur have seen Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg star since arriving from Southampton over the summer – but Jose Mourinho may now want competition.

Hojbjerg has been the heartbeat of the Spurs side this season, quickly becoming one of Mourinho’s most trusted players.

Harry Winks isn’t an exact like-for-like replacement though, and that means Spurs may need to add another holding midfielder when possible.

90Min now claim that Mourinho does have a target in mind, as he is interested in bringing Atalanta ace Marten de Roon to Spurs.

Manchester City are thought to be keen too, but they’re only looking at a summer move – meaning Spurs could pounce in January.

De Roon is another hard-working, relentless holding midfielder with outstanding reading of the game, which prompted Mourinho to call him ‘phenomenal’ in 2017.

The Dutchman was with Middlesbrough at the time, but he spent just one season in England before heading back to Italy to re-join Atalanta.

Some Spurs fans are a little worried with that, believing that De Roon isn’t good enough for Tottenham having failed once in the Premier League already., whilst urging Spurs to avoid him as they feel he is already too old as he approaches 30.

Others think that a player like De Roon is ‘definitely required’ to ease the burden on Hojbjerg, believing he as an interesting target for January having starred in Italy.
