Former Tottenham Hotspur hitman Jermain Defoe reminded the Premier League of his undoubted brilliance on Saturday.
Prior to Bournemouth’s trip to Crystal Palace, the 35-year-old striker had only netted once in 12 games for the Cherries following his Bosman move from Sunderland in the summer.
But the Tottenham legend scored both in the 2-2 draw at Selhurst Park – and his second was a bit special.
Defoe levelled up on the stroke of half time by smashing a volley past Julian Speroni from the tightest of angles to evoke memories of Marco van Basten’s famous wonder goal for the Netherlands.
And suffice to say Spurs fans were delighted for their former son.
Tottenham could have had Defoe in the summer for free but manager Mauricio Pochettino wound up signing Fernando Llorente, who scored his first goal for the club at the 17th time of asking in Wednesday’s 3-0 win over APOEL in the Champions League.
It remains to be seen whether the out-of-form Spaniard builds on that goal or, like Vincent Janssen last season, continues to struggle, but the way in which Defoe took his goal is bound to have fans of the North London club a little jealous.
