Roberto Martinez’s side won 4-3 away to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a victory which extended their unbeaten World Cup qualification campaign in Group H.
The Belgians had Tottenham Hotspur rocks Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld in a three-man defence but somehow shipped three nonetheless.
But goals from Thomas Meunier, Michy Batshuayi, the Tottenham star and an 84th-minute winner from Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco sealed the victory – Belgium’s eighth in nine World Cup qualifiers.
In doing so, Vertonghen, who joined Spurs under Andre Villas-Boas back in 2012, joined Jan Ceulemans as his country’s most capped player of all time, with 96 appearances.
And fans of the North London club were quick to wish him congratulations on Twitter.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side host Bournemouth at Wembley this weekend, before travelling to Real Madrid in their third Champions League clash of the group stage.
