Tottenham Hotspur have been strangely linked with Gareth Southgate.

Tottenham Hotspur clinched a win over Southampton on Saturday afternoon, which should halt some of the rumours about Mauricio Pochettino’s future for a little while yet.

Beating the Saints 2-1 was a vital result for Pochettino and co, having suffered disappointing results against Olympiacos, Leicester City and Colchester United.

There was palpable relief as Tottenham got a gritty if unconvincing win, as Pochettino and his players will hopefully use this result to really kick on again.

However, just hours after the final whistle, the Daily Star reported that Tottenham were eyeing up England boss Gareth Southgate for whenever Pochettino leaves.

Tottenham may well becoming towards the end of a cycle under Pochettino, but any imminent exit would be a surprise, as would interest in Southgate.

Yes, he’s done a fine job as England manager, but he hasn’t managed a club side for almost 10 years now, having lost his job as Middlesbrough boss in October 2009.

It would be a real gamble by Spurs to hand him the reins to a top four Premier League side, and Spurs fans have been taking to Twitter to share their displeasure.

Some believe that Southgate would be just as bad as Tim Sherwood, and would be a backward step for the club as he is ‘useless’ as a manager – but fortunately for them, a move seems massively unlikely.
