Tottenham Hotspur picked up their first win since the Premier League’s return as they beat West Ham United 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Spurs had drawn 1-1 with Manchester United on Friday, squandering a 1-0 lead as Bruno Fernandes’ penalty cancelled out Steven Bergwijn’s opener.

The first half against West Ham was far from fluent, but there was hope before the break as Son Heung-min found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out by VAR.

Tottenham did find a way through in the second half, but it was very fortuitous. Not only did the ball go into the net off Tomas Soucek, but the ball also appeared to strike Davinson Sanchez’s arm.

Harry Kane sealed the 2-0 win by racing clear from Son Heung-min’s pass, and Tottenham picked up a much-needed three points against their London rivals.

Spurs weren’t quite at their best, but they claimed a fairly comfortable win and kept a clean sheet – with Eric Dier playing an important role.

Jose Mourinho is using Dier exclusively as a defender now, rather than deploying him in midfield. He produced another strong showing last night, and fans have been praising him on Twitter.

Supporters praised Dier’s development under Mourinho, claiming that he ‘looks like a new player’ whilst playing in defence.

Others noted that he has been a different player even since football returned, and has been Tottenham’s best player in their last two games.
