Tottenham Hotspur were in the market for a new playmaker in the summer of 2019, and appear to have missed out on one big signing.

Mauricio Pochettino wanted to bring in another creative player, seemingly sensing that Christian Eriksen wouldn’t be at the club for much longer.

In the end, Tottenham secured a deadline day deal for Giovani Lo Celso, taking him on loan from Real Betis before signing him permanently.

A notable name that Spurs considered was Bruno Fernandes, who was starring with Sporting in Portugal at the time – but no deal materialised.

Earlier this year, Fernandes did earn his move to England by joining Manchester United in a £68million deal, and he has impressed in the Premier League.

Fernandes has hit 18 goals and 13 assists in 33 appearances for United, becoming a Premier League star in the process – and he has now admitted that he had an ‘amazing’ proposal from Tottenham.

Fernandes has told the Official Manchester United Podcast that he was ‘sad’ that a move to Tottenham didn’t go through, suggesting that he was close to a move but now feels that something special has happened by joining United.

Spurs fans have been reacting on Twitter, suggesting that they would have taken Fernandes in a heartbeat and wish he had signed, believing that it was a major mistake from Daniel Levy.

Others believe that Lo Celso is better than Fernandes anyway, and are much happier with the Argentinian than if Fernandes had signed.
