Two years on from almost paying a multi-million fee for Max Meyer, Tottenham Hotspur have an opportunity to sign him for free.

Schalke director Christian Heidel was quoted by ESPN yesterday confirming Meyer will leave Schalke this summer when his contract expires.

Meyer has been capped by Germany and at just 22-years-old he is one of their brightest prospects.

This year he has been playing in a more defensive midfield role, which has capped his attacking output but allowed him to develop a new side of his game.

This looks a costly snub for the Bundesliga side right now and Spurs have the chance to sign Meyer on a free transfer if manager Mauricio Pochettino decides he is still wanted.

Spurs missed out on signing Ross Barkley in January, stepping aside, perhaps because there was an even bigger bargain around the corner. Max Meyer would certainly fit the bill.
