Tottenham have sold Kevin Wimmer to Stoke City.

Tottenham Hotspur have sold Kevin Wimmer to Tottenham for a fee of £18 million.

Stoke confirmed the move on their official website, with the switch potentially giving Wimmer a greater chance of establishing himself as a Premier League regular.

The fee may not seem unreasonable in the current transfer market, but it represents a big jump on the £4.7 million fee Spurs paid to sign him from Cologne in 2015.

During that time he made just 31 appearances for Spurs, being used predominantly in a back-up role.

Last summer Wimmer signed a new contract at Tottenham after an impressive debut season at the club but was unable to kick on in his second season.

The Austria international could not really afford a third season sat on the bench, and his chance of first team football were likely to have been severely impeded by the arrival of record buy Davinson Sanchez.

Wimmer’s departure appeared inevitable as a result, and Spurs fans have been hailing chairman Daniel Levy after news of the £18 million fee broke.

While Levy’s buys have been hit and miss in recent seasons, he has excelled at selling players for inflated prices.
