Tottenham Hotspur were eliminated from the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage last night after a penalty shoot out.

Eric Dier and Lucas Moura missed spot kicks as Chelsea won 4-2 on penalties.

It was yet another near miss for Spurs, who were beaten in the FA Cup at the semi final stages the last two seasons.

Defender Jan Vertonghen spoke to Spurs TV after the game and was clearly unhappy with the loss, but vowed to bounce back.

He discussed how this Spurs squad have become used to dealing with setbacks.

He said: “Yeah we have had a lot of chances to come back, and this is what we do.

“We’ve had it in the past but we are so strong mentally and physically in every single way and that is what makes us good.”

Vertonghen’s comments reflect the feelings of a player who has been there and done it before with Spurs, being on the wrong end of heartbreaking losses on several occasions.

Tottenham fans felt a bit of deja vu with Vertonghen’s comments, and observed that his body language and demeanour showed a player who was angrier than he was letting on.
