The centre-back has been selected on the bench in recent weeks, as the club’s third option even ahead of Austrian international Kevin Wimmer.
Wimmer was selected alongside Carter-Vickers against the Gills and the pair were relatively untroubled as they saw out the victory against League One opposition.
Carter-Vickers’ assured performance impressed supporters who had been waiting to see him make the step up.
Carter-Vickers already has the faith of his head coach, and at just 18-years-old has a very bright future ahead of him.
The teenager is a USA under-23 international and has the physical attributes you would expect of a centre-back, and ws able to exert his dominance against his Gillingham opponents.
There is no clear path to the first team just yet with Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen clearly first choice, but he has seemingly past Kevin Wimmer in Pochettino’s eyes, and last night will give him no doubts as to whether he is ready to step in.
