The defender put in a superb performance in Wednesday night’s Champions League last-16 first-leg win over Borussia Dortmund.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is in the running for the Champions League Player of the Week following his performance in Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.
The Belgian was utilised at left-wing back in the last-16 first leg at Wembley Stadium after injuries to Ben Davies and Danny Rose, and Mauricio Pochettino’s decision paid dividends thanks to his impressive performance against the Bundesliga side.
Vertonghen crossed for Son Heung-min to break the deadlock in the 46th minute, before volleying in a goal of his own to double the hosts’ lead, and alongside Fernando Llorente’s contribution, Spurs now have a sizeable lead going into the second leg.
As a result, the UEFA website has named the 31-year-old as one of the candidates for the weekly accolade, along with Italian midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, who plays for Roma, his compatriot and Paris Saint-Germain lynchpin Marco Verratti, and Vertonghen’s countryman and Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
