It was only last Autumn that Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks was being hailed as England’s most pivotal midfielder for this summer’s World Cup after sensational performances for club and country.

His displays against Real Madrid were a major feather in his cap, but he has had a difficult few months since.

He was out of action for several weeks in December and January with injury but since returning he has struggled for form.

Winks was poor in midweek against Rochdale at Wembley in the FA Cup and it was not a one-off.

The 22-year-old was making his third appearance of 2018, following the replay against Newport and the away tie with Rochdale.

Perhaps Winks simply needs to play in a bigger game against better opposition in order to lift his game, but he has not done anything in his recent performances against lower league teams to suggest he deserves a spot.

Breaking into the team is more difficult for Winks at present than it was earlier in the season.

Victor Wanyama is available and fit again, while Mousa Dembele is in the midst of one of the finest spells of form of his career, unlike a few months ago.

Winks will get his chances, and has shown he has the ability to turn it around, but fans are understandably worried.
