Gent’s Jeremy Perbet celebrates
Tottenham Hotspur’s mini-slump continued with a 1-0 defeat to Genk in Belgium on Thursday.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men will have been keen to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat to Liverpool, but failed to do so after a laboured performance in which Jeremy Perbet’s goal settled the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie.
And the Londoners must now end their Wembley hoodoo in next week’s return fixture if they are to progress to the last 16 of a competition which could lead to Champions league qualification next term.
Tottenham were without key men Danny Rose and Jan Vertonghen at the Ghelamco Arena, while Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min began the evening on the bench.
And though Spurs created precious little in Flanders, it was Pochettino’s decision to select Eric Dier – a star in central midfield last season – ahead Kevin Wimmer in the absence of Vertonghen which seems to have most irked the Lilywhites’ faitfhul.
