Tottenham Hotspur are set to open talks with Eric Dier over a new contract to extend his stay in North London.
That’s according to 90Min, who claim that Tottenham are planning talks with Dier over a new deal.
It’s unclear just how long Spurs want to keep Dier for, but an extended stay appears to be on the cards.
Dier’s current contract at Tottenham expires in the summer of 2024, meaning he is now in the last 18 months of his deal.
Tottenham don’t want to see Dier run down his contract and leave for nothing, so talks are now imminent.
Dier joined the club from Sporting for just £4million back in the summer of 2014.
That means Dier is now set to go beyond 10 years at Spurs, if this new deal can be secured.
Eric Dier still divides opinion at Tottenham
Dier may be approaching a decade as a Spurs player but that doesn’t mean everybody is a fan.
Just last week, Sky Sports pundit Alan McInally absolutely hammered Dier after his performance for Tottenham against Leicester City.
McInally suggested that Dier wouldn’t be at Spurs much longer if he was committing to playing as a centre back.
Well, Spurs appear to disagree as they now want to keep Dier for even longer than planned.
Dier started out as a right back under Mauricio Pochettino before then turning his hand to playing in defensive midfield.
Dier’s partnership with Mousa Dembele earned praise and England caps followed for the Tottenham man.
However, Dier began to struggle and has ended up playing in defence again under Jose Mourinho and now in a back three under Antonio Conte.
Seen as one of the team leaders at Spurs, Dier is seemingly making the middle centre back position his own with this new contract on the horizon.
That will take Dier into his 30’s at Tottenham and it looks like the club are happy with his performances – even if pundits may not agree.
