Tottenham Hotspur want Emiliano Martinez and Rio Ferdinand has admitted that some who have played with him believe he is ‘wacky’.

It’s not all that often that we see former Arsenal players turning out for Tottenham but it could end up happening with Martinez.

Give Me Sport claim that Tottenham are looking towards Martinez as a potential signing.

Hugo Lloris turns 36 this time next week and Tottenham need to think about a successor between the sticks.

Martinez is believed to be on their radar alongside Everton’s Jordan Pickford, though convincing Aston Villa to sell won’t be easy.

The 30-year-old has become something of a late bloomer having failed to really break through at Arsenal.

Leaving North London has allowed Martinez to become a star for club and country, so convincing him to head back to the capital may be a tough ask.

Tottenham target Martinez emerges as Argentina’s World Cup hero

Martinez was already loved in Argentina but he became a hero for life on Sunday.

Argentina clinched the World Cup on Sunday evening, beating France on penalties after a quite astonishing game in Qatar.

Martinez saved from Kingsley Coman in the penalty shootout and his mind games seemed to put off Aurelien Tchouameni as he dragged his spot kick wide of the target.

Martinez was given the Golden Glove award for being the best goalkeeper at the World Cup, writing himself into Argentinian history.

Rio Ferdinand certainly loved watching Martinez in Qatar and has told BBC Sport that the Aston Villa star’s character really stands out to him.

Ferdinand noted that Argentina players are always rushing to celebrate with Martinez when he makes a big save, as seen when he denied Garang Kuol in Argentina’s win over Australia.

Ferdinand even added that he has spoken to people who have played with Martinez and they called him ‘wacky’ off the pitch, as seen with his Golden Glove celebration on Sunday.

“One of the things that stands out for me is his character,” said Ferdinand. “The way that you see the other players, they go to him when he makes big saves or big moments and he communicates.”

“I’ve spoken to people who have been in the changing room with him, they say that off the pitch, he’s a bit… he’s a bit wacky! A lot of goalkeepers are like that but he’s made big saves at very critical moments,” he added.
