Ian Wright has criticised Tottenham Hotspur right wing-back Emerson Royal on Match of the Day on BBC One (11:30pm, January 1, 2022) for his performance against Watford.

The Arsenal legend was not impressed by the crosses that Emerson was delivering for Tottenham in the 1-0 win against Watford on New Year’s Day.

Davinson Sanchez scored the winner for Spurs in the Premier League game in the 96th minute.

MOTD pundit Wright was disappointed by the 22-year-old right wing-back, who cost Tottenham €30 million (£25.21 million) (BBC Sport) in the summer of 2021.

Wright said on MOTD: “Emerson, it’s almost as if Watford have said, ‘Let him have it’. I thought that every single cross he put in today had nothing on it.”

Disappointing display

In our opinion, Emerson’s performance for Tottenham against Watford was disappointing.

A right-back by trade, the Brazil international could not fulfil a major part of his role as a right wing-back against Watford.

Emerson’s delivery and his overall performance in attack left much to be desired.

The 22-year-old did get into good positions on the right, but his final ball let him down.

And now there is speculation that Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte wants a new right wing-back.

Emerson put in as many as 14 crosses, but only five of them were accurate.

The Tottenham player also gave six key passes and took 114 touches.
