Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing Elye Wahi and have been given a boost with Borussia Dortmund possibly out of the race.

That’s according to Sport Bild reporter Christian Falk, who was speaking to Caught Offside.

Falk claims that ‘Dortmund are out of the race’ for Wahi but it’s unclear just why the Bundesliga side are backing away.

Falk adds that Wahi may already be ‘too interesting’ for Bundesliga clubs and a Premier League move could be on the cards.

The German added on Twitter that Tottenham have Wahi on their transfer wish list if Harry Kane leaves.

This comes after Foot Mercato reported that Wahi has changed his agent ahead of a potential transfer.

Foot Mercato also claimed in January that Arsenal want Wahi and have joined Tottenham in chasing the Montpellier hitman.

Tottenham target Elye Wahi is exciting but not a Harry Kane replacement

We can understand why Arsenal and Tottenham are both interested in signing Wahi.

The 20-year-old has been outstanding this season with eight goals in 21 Ligue 1 appearances.

Mostly a centre forward who can also play out wide if needed, Wahi was highly regarded at Caen and is fulfilling his potential at Montpellier.

Yet it’s hard to imagine that Tottenham would view Wahi as a Harry Kane replacement.

Firstly, there seems to be a decent chance of Tottenham convincing Kane to sign a new deal with his current contract expiring next summer.

Then you get into the calibre of player Tottenham would need to replace both the goals and creativity that Kane provides.

Wahi has potential but Tottenham would ideally need somebody with more proven quality to step into Kane’s role.

We think it’s more likely that Wahi is an alternative to Arnaut Danjuma in terms of being a versatile attacking threat for Tottenham – and Dortmund bowing out means Tottenham may be able to push for a deal.
