Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Borussia Monchengladbach star Denis Zakaria – but he could be heading to Roma on a free transfer.

Tottenham may be in the market for a midfielder in 2022, even with Tanguy Ndombele back in the fold under Nuno Espirito Santo.

Bild reported in August that Zakaria was a top target for Tottenham. Everton and Arsenal were linked too, but the summer window ended without a deal in place.

The Swiss midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season, so Gladbach may have been hoping to bring in some cash.

Able to sign a pre-contract agreement in January, Tottenham may have had one eye on a bargain deal for Zakaria.

Instead, it looks like Zakaria will end up joining Roma to play under former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho.

Tottenham target Zakaria off to Roma?

Gianluca Di Marzio notes that Roma wanted Granit Xhaka from Arsenal over the summer.

Now he is staying at Arsenal for the long term, Xhaka’s international teammate Zakaria could be Roma-bound.

It’s suggested that Roma sporting director Tiago Pinto has been talking to Zakaria’s representatives to set up a 2022 deal, with an agreement drawing closer.

Roma either want Zakaria for free next summer or in a cut-price deal in January. Roma could even send a player to Gladbach to try and engineer a deal.

Roma seem to be moving towards an agreement with Zakaria, leaving Tottenham to ultimately look elsewhere.
