Belgium’s Toby Alderweireld in action with Italy’s Eder
Belgium and Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has been speaking about his upcoming fixture in Euro 2016 against the Republic of Ireland.
The Belgian had a game to forget in the first fixture as then Red Devils were defeated 2-0 by Italy, with the Spurs defender at fault for one of the goals.
Belgium’s Marouane Fellaini looks dejected with Jan Vertonghen after the match
He has told Sport Foot Magazine today about how he had become used to playing at right-back for his nation but that he was happy to do a job in any position:
“I play where the coach asks me. I knew I was staying on a good season in the middle and that I could change it. The advantage of having played the entire season is that I can operate the trigger quickly.
“Right-back has somewhat become my appointed position with the national team.”
Manchester City’s Vincent Kompany
Alderweireld came into the tournament off the back of an exceptional season with Tottenham but found himself caught out against the Italians.
Belgium have troubles in their defensive unit, with the absence of Vincent Kompany keenly felt by the highest ranked nation at the Euros this summer.
Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld reacts
Alderweireld will know that he and his Tottenham team-mate Jan Vertonghen will need to improve on their performances if they are to help their much fancied nation progress into the next round of the competition.
What remains to be seen is where exactly both players will feature against the Irish.
