Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Kevin Wimmer has spoken about playing at left-back for Austria this week.

Austria took on Wales in a FIFA World Cup qualifier yesterday, in a game that ended 2-2 – with Wimmer scoring a very unfortunate own goal.

Austria are currently on the hunt for a new regular left-back, due to the retirement of Leicester City star and former Austria captain Christian Fuchs.

Against Wales his manager decided that the Spurs star was the best man for the job and it is expected he may play there more going forward.

Speaking about playing at left-back Wimmer told Kleine Zeitung how he’d played there before and on how he thought he performed v Gareth Bale and co:

“The team manager spoke to me on Monday (to see) if I can think about it (playing left-back) because I’ve played it before a few times.

“Sure it’s a bit strange that the processes are anyway a bit different. There was not much time to adapt to it, but I have tried to make the best of it.”

“Tactically, notionally, it worked. Offensively I was a bit cautious and wanted to focus on the defensive we wanted, that we remain behind always in the majority, because we know that the Welsh are very strong on the counter, have fast players.”

Spurs will no doubt be pleased that they have another player with a clear other string to their bow.

Although, that said, it is not a string they particularly need – with Danny Rose, Ben Davies, Jan Vertonghen and Kieran Trippier all capable of playing at left-back.

Wimmer though will just be pleased to be a part of the Austrian first-team amid trouble getting regular playing time at Tottenham Hotspur.
