Tottenham star delighted after Belgium got one over England at the World Cup.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is enjoying being back on international duty with Belgium.
Belgium finished third at the World Cup, beating England in the play-off after both sides lost in the semi-finals.
This was a game which pitted Vertonghen against several of his Tottenham clubmates.
Along with Toby Alderweireld and Mousa Dembele, Vertonghen’s Belgium earned bragging rights with a 2-0 victory.
Vertonghen realises that while it was a game few people in England cared for after the heartbreak of semi-final defeat, he can’t resist lording it over his Tottenham teammates who play for the Three Lions.
He told Gazet Van Antwerpen: “I would find it annoying if people care about it, but I can not resist giving out a dig to English teammates at Tottenham.
“They now have a smaller mouth than before.”
He is less so vocal with Hugo Lloris, whose France side beat Belgium in the semi-finals and went on to win the World Cup.
Despite the friendly international rivalry, Tottenham’s team are close, having held the same core of players under manager Mauricio Pochettino for the past four years.
This enabled them to start the season strongly despite their late arrival back from the World Cup, with Spurs winning three of their opening four games.
