Tottenham Hotspur could only pick up a 1-1 draw with West Bromwich Albion in their latest match.
West Brom took an early lead against Spurs at the weekend, when Solomon Rondon finished well, and they proceeded to defend that advantage.
The Baggies were slow to restart the action, and had plenty of men back in defence, as they looked to frustrate Tottenham.
And Dier couldn’t believe that some of West Brom’s tactics were allowed by referee Mike Jones.
“It’s confusing that you wait until the 80th minute to penalise it when it’s been happening from the first minute. It’s something I really don’t understand, it doesn’t make sense,” Dier said.
“He said that he doesn’t want to be the referee that blows the whistle for someone holding the ball longer than six seconds, because no-one does. But if someone doesn’t do it then the goalkeeper’s going to end up holding the ball for 30 seconds, 45 seconds.
“I think it’s [meant to be] six seconds and sometimes it was a lot longer than 20 seconds, for sure – I guarantee you.
“I think it helps the ref to stop it early doors with warnings, yellow cards.”
Despite Albion’s slow play, Spurs did manage to make some sort of comeback during the contest.
Harry Kane found an equaliser for Tottenham, but they were not able to completely turn the game around.
Spurs’ failure to beat the Baggies has arguably ended their title hopes this season already, with league leaders Manchester City now 13 points ahead of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Tottenham have now slipped down to fifth place in the Premier League table, after what has been a disappointing run of form in domestic competitions.
