Tottenham Hotspur once wanted Darwin Nunez and the Liverpool striker will have Spurs in his sights this weekend.

Tottenham have found it difficult to sign a striker to support Harry Kane.

Anybody really good enough to minimise the blow from any Kane absence wouldn’t really want to play second fiddle to him.

Vincent Janssen, Fernando Llorente and Carlos Vinicius have all had a go with mixed results.

Tottenham did actually consider a deal under Jose Mourinho that could have fit the bill…

Tottenham Hotspur once wanted Darwin Nunez

It may be forgotten at this point but Tottenham actually fancied signing Darwin Nunez in 2020.

Nunez was playing for Almeria in Spain’s second tier at the time but had impressed with 16 goals in 32 games there.

The Daily Mail reported that Tottenham were considering a move for Nunez but Jose Mourinho decided against going ahead with a deal.

You have to wonder if Tottenham regret that decision.

Yes, they’re happy with Richarlison now but going with a short-term signing Carlos Vinicius over the long-term pay-off with Nunez feels like an error.

Nunez became a goalscoring sensation with Benfica and is now finding the net for Liverpool too.

Tuesday’s goal against Napoli means Nunez has now scored five times in his last seven games for Liverpool.

Liverpool head down to North London to take on Tottenham this weekend and are likely to be relying on Nunez for a big attacking display.

Cristian Romero’s absence through injury is a real blow to Tottenham’s back three and Nunez will be looking to take full advantage.

In another world, maybe Nunez would have developed into a supporting attacker to Harry Kane.

Instead, Mourinho chose against a move and Tottenham will have to hope that Nunez doesn’t come back to haunt them this weekend.
