Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is now a World Cup winner – and he has been named in ITV’s Team of the Tournament.
Romero may have endured something of a sinking feeling after his first appearance of this World Cup.
The Tottenham star looked well off the pace against Saudi Arabia and was caught out for their first goal in a stunning 2-1 win.
Romero was substituted in that game and even benched in favour of Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez against Mexico.
Lionel Scaloni put his trust in Romero though and brought him back in against Poland and then for the rest of the tournament.
Romero was outstanding against France in the World Cup final, with his aggressive nature allowing him to nip and sniff out attacks quickly.
Maybe he could have defended Kylian Mbappe’s volley a little better but this was a strong display – even if he threatened to overstep the mark on a couple of occasions.
Come full time, nobody cared or remembered those hot-tempered moments as Romero was able to celebrate the most incredible of World Cup wins.
Argentina claimed the biggest prize in football after a truly crazy 3-3 draw and a penalty shootout win with Lionel Messi putting the icing on his incredible career.

ITV name Tottenham ace Romero in their Team of the Tournament
Pundits and fans will now be reflecting on the last month of action in Qatar with many naming their team of the tournament nominations.
ITV shared theirs after Argentina’s win and Tottenham star Romero was right in there as his impact after a tough start was recognised.
Romero partnered Josko Gvardiol in the heart of defence, something Tottenham may be dreaming of in 2023 as ITV went with a 4-2-3-1.
Emiliano Martinez – another rumoured Tottenham target – was in goal with Marcos Acuna and Achraf Hakimi as full backs.
Sofyan Amrabat and Aurelien Tchouameni were in midfield with Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe supporting Julian Alvarez up top.
That’s five Argentina players named in ITV’s Best XI and Romero will be delighted to have turned his World Cup around after a tough start.
