Tottenham Hotspur, it’s happened again.
For the third time in a week, Spurs have missed out on a transfer target to another club. Adama Traore has headed off to Barcelona, Dusan Vlahovic has gone to Juventus, and now, Luis Diaz looks set to join Liverpool.
This isn’t a good situation, and while Traore and Vlahovic heading elsewhere will hurt Tottenham, Diaz’s move to Liverpool could haunt them for years to come in a similar way Willian’s move to Chelsea way back in 2013 did.
In case you don’t remember, Willian was set to sign for Spurs back in August 2013 before Chelsea hijacked the deal at the 11th hour, and as we all know, he went on to be rather successful at Stamford Bridge.

Indeed, the Brazilian won two Premier League titles and countless London derbies against Spurs after snubbing a move to north London.
Spurs had to watch in pain as Willian tasted unbelievable success with Chelsea, and there’s reason to believe the same could happen with Diaz at Liverpool.
The Colombian looks like he’s going to be an absolute star. His pace and energy make him a great fit for this Jurgen Klopp team, while his 12 goals in the Portuguese League this term show that he certainly knows where the back of the net is.
He’s joining a Liverpool team that, just like Chelsea were when Willian joined, are ready to challenge for major honours, and Spurs may once again end up watching Diaz earn winners’ medal after winners’ medal with one of their biggest rivals while they continue to fail in their attempts to kick on.
So often Tottenham have the right idea when it comes to transfers. Paulo Dybala, Jack Grealish and Bruno Fernandes could all have been Spurs players if the club played their cards right, but a lack of gumption has seen so many golden opportunities slip through Spurs’ fingers in recent years, and this looks like it could be another example of that trend.
