Christian Eriksen has told the Telegraph of his desire to light up the World Cup with Denmark, but that may not be ideal for Tottenham Hotspur.

Eriksen sent Denmark to Russia with a brilliant performance against the Republic of Ireland in midweek, when he blasted in a hat-trick in a 5-1 victory.

Eriksen’s continued excellent form is certainly good news for Spurs, but if he does excel at the World Cup there is no doubt interest in him will mount.

Eriksen is already regarded as one of the best attacking players in the Premier League, and a strong World Cup would only elevate his reputation even further.

Real Madrid have shown a tendency to sign the top performer at the biggest international tournament, with James Rodriguez the latest to move to the Bernabeu after excellent tournament for Colombia back in 2014.

And Tottenham would almost certainly have to fend off interest in Eriksen, if he does shine at the World Cup, as he hopes.

While Spurs are under no pressure to sell, they will not want one of their key players to be distracted by off-the-field rumours, going into the 2018/19 campaign.

And it may just be better for Spurs, if Eriksen doesn’t quite achieve his wish, as they would have a greater chance of keeping hold of their key creative influence.
