Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino needs a serious talk with Davinson Sanchez.
Davinson Sanchez is making headlines for the wrong reasons lately.
The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back has been immense since his club-record £42 million switch from Ajax in August but recently he has been throwing up worrying signs.
On Tuesday, the Colombian defender somehow managed to avoid a second yellow card after chopping down Martin Olsson during Spurs’ 2-0 win at Swansea City.
Referee Bobby Madely gave him a long talking-to but ultimately elected against sending him off, but he should have and it would’ve been his second red card in a month.
It was a big let-off for a Tottenham side who were only one goal ahead at the time and Pochettino needs to stamp out Sanchez’s disciplinary problems.
Fans will argue that it is important for Sanchez to retain a healthy aggression, and they’re right, but his tackle on Ayew and his elbow on Richarlison, for which he earned a three-match ban, were stupid above all else and Pochettino doesn’t need such loose cannons.
Perhaps the Argentine did set him straight after the Watford incident, but you have to wonder how clearly the message was received on the back of his reckless tackle on the Ghanaian.
Sanchez is a class act, but there are still issues to iron out and Pochettino must be firm. The Lilywhites boss already has Alli, who is also prone to lapses of discipline, and Pochettino doesn’t need another one.
