Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told the London Evening Standard that he was looking for answers for why his side lost the Champions League final every day in the immediate aftermath of the defeat.

Tottenham were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool in their last competitive match of the previous campaign, and it was a crushing blow to Pochettino’s side.

The Argentine boss admits that he found it difficult to get over the defeat, and he turned to his assistant manager, Jesus Perez, for support.

“I talked to Jesus [Perez, assistant manager] every day to try to find the reason,” Pochettino said.

“Always you try to analyse but in the end it’s small details that make the difference. I thought we were better than Liverpool. It wasn’t a great final.”

Tottenham did have large amounts of possession in the Champions League final, but it was Liverpool who got over the line.

The Reds scored early from the spot and then Divock Origi sealed victory late on.

Tottenham will now need to use that defeat as motivation to push on and achieve similar success again.

It is a mark of the progress that Spurs have made in recent times that they now feel so disappointed about losing Champions League finals, when they were previously striving just to be in the competition.

Tottenham begin the new Premier League season with a match against Aston Villa in two weekends’ time.
