Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed to Football.London that he has never attempted to sign Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero.

Tottenham have been tentatively linked with Aguero on a few occasions in recent years.

However, Pochettino has denied ever making a move for his Argentine compatriot, as he has never truly had an opportunity to do so.

“I think he’s one of the best striker,” Pochettino said. “I don’t want to compare again with some musician again. He’s a great striker. He’s Argentinean and I hope he helps Argentina to go to the next World Cup.

“Me? When? No, I’ve never had the possibility to sign him.

“I was at another level, I was at a slow level in that moment, Espanyol and Southampton. It was very difficult to speak about this type of player for us.”

Even at Spurs, Pochettino has never had the financial clout to stand a chance to landing Aguero from Manchester City.

Aguero has begun this campaign in brilliant form, and stole the headlines at the weekend, as he struck a hat-trick.

The City forward helped Pep Guardiola’s side pick up an impressive 6-0 victory over Watford.

Aguero already has six goals to his name this season, and he has also claimed two assists.

Spurs, meanwhile, are yet to find their groove in an attacking sense – and have scored just seven goals in their opening five Premier League matches.
