Tottenham Hotspur won 4-1 against Southampton yesterday evening.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told the Daily Mail that he is optimistic that Toby Alderweireld will return to action soon.

Alderweireld was surprisingly left off Tottenham’s team sheet for their match against Southampton last night.

The Belgian defender is currently suffering with a virus, but Pochettino is hopeful that he will be back in time for Tottenham’s next match, which comes against Watford on New Year’s Day.

“We hope he will be available against Watford because today he was better,” Pochettino said.

“He got a virus, was sick, vomiting, and fever in the last two days. We hope he will be okay.”

Alderweireld has already missed much of the season with injury, so Spurs will be hoping his absence is not a prolonged one.

Even without Alderweireld, Spurs still managed to get past Southampton last night – with the Lilywhites picking up a 4-1 victory.

Tottenham actually went behind early on, but a Dele Alli brace and solitary strikes from Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son sealed a comfortable triumph for Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

Spurs are now in fifth place in the Premier League table – just one point away from the Champions League qualification spots.
