Tottenham Hotspur were thought to be interested in bringing Frenkie De Jong to White Hart Lane.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino’s comments to Football London about Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong show why he wanted the midfielder at White Hart Lane.

Bleacher Report claim that Spurs had a bid rejected for De Jong, before he made a £65 million move to join Barcelona.

De Jong has also confirmed to FourFourTwo that he thought about moving to Tottenham, but he has picked Barcelona instead.

The Dutch midfielder will have a chance to show Pochettino exactly what he is missing when Ajax take on Tottenham in the Champions League semi-final later this evening.

And it is fair to say that Pochettino will be ensuring that Spurs have a close watch on the youngster throughout the contest.

Pochettino said: “If you ask me to focus on Frenkie de Jong he is a fantastic player. I understand why Barcelona pay this fantastic amount. He is one of the players who impressed me the most but not only him, they have a lot of players around with quality.”

De Jong is the Ajax player who Spurs have been linked most heavily to in recent times, although he is far from the only one.

Tottenham have a history of signing players from Ajax, and could well go for some members of their current squad again in the summer.

Tottenham have not made a signing for over a year, but are thought to have money to invest in the next transfer window.
