Tottenham Hotspur signed Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle United during the summer transfer window.
Mauricio Pochettino has not got much wrong since taking over at Tottenham Hotspur, but his decision to bring in Moussa Sissoko looks like it could be an expensive error.
Tottenham signed Sissoko from Newcastle United for a reported fee of £30 million in the summer (the Chronicle), and the Frenchman has struggled so far.
Sissoko has not added much to Tottenham’s attack to date, with his performance against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League recently causing him to come under heavy criticism.
The 27-year-old was well out of sorts against Leverkusen, and Pochettino’s statement in the summer about £30 million players may come back to haunt him now.
“If we spend £25-30 million, we need to be sure that this type of player represents Bale or Cristiano for Real Madrid, or Messi or Neymar for Barcelona,” Pochettino said to ESPN. “We need to speak about a player that is our best player.”
Sissoko has shown nothing so far to suggest that he could go on to emulate Gareth Bale’s achievements at Spurs.
Instead, there are already concerns over whether he will be able to hold down a first-team place.
At the moment, Tottenham appear to have numerous better options in their attack than Sissoko.
And unless the powerful winger can find his feet quickly at White Hart Lane, Sissoko’s signing looks like being the first expensive error which Pochettino has made at Tottenham.
