Tottenham Hotspur defender Cameron Carter-Vickers could make his debut against Gillingham this evening.
Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has told ESPN that he considers Cameron Carter-Vickers to be a better defender than he was.
Carter-Vickers has been a regular on Tottenham’s substitutes’ bench this season, and appears to have jumped ahead of Kevin Wimmer in the selection order at White Hart Lane.
The 18-year-old enjoyed an impressive pre-season, and he is now on the verge of making his breakthrough for the Lilywhites.
Carter-Vickers is yet to make his competitive debut for Tottenham, but he could be included in the London side’s starting line-up when they take on Gillingham in the EFL Cup later this evening.
“Maybe,” Pochettino said with a smile, when asked whether Carter-Vickers would start this evening.
“I told you that, for me, he will be one of the best centre-backs in England in the future. He has a strong mentality, good quality and all the qualities for playing centre-back, Pochettino said.
“He is better than [I was]! I said one of the best centre-backs in England, and I wasn’t one of the best in Spain.”
Pochettino is expected to announce a much changed lined up for Spurs’ cup match this evening.
The Argentine boss has always been keen to give youngsters an opportunity and Marcus Edwards and Harry Winks are another two of Spurs’ academy prospects who could play in the cup tie.
Gillingham are currently in 13th place in the League One table, having made a mixed start to the new season.
