Interest seems to be dwindling in Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld.

Mauricio Pochettino was mocked by Tottenham Hotspur fans for his comments about players signing new contracts being just like new signings, but he could yet have a chance to have the last laugh.

Spurs have got five of their new players to sign contract extensions this summer, but have not got a deal over the line.

Pochettino said to the London Evening Standard: “And of course, very happy with players who have signed new contracts like Harry Kane, Son, Lamela, Davinson and Michel Vorm – that’s like signing five new players.”

HITC showed how Spurs fans had laughed at the comments from Pochettino, but the Argentine boss has a chance to prove himself correct.

With interest seemingly dwindling in Toby Alderweireld, it may be time for Spurs to try and get the centre-back to commit his future again.

Alderweireld was widely expected to move to Manchester United this summer, but it seems that Jose Mourinho’s side are after Harry Maguire instead.

Mauricio Pochettino, Manager of Tottenham Hotspur speaks to the media during the press conference at Allianz Stadium on February 12, 2018 in Turin, Italy.

And if Tottenham could get Alderweireld to pen a new deal, then that genuinely would be celebrated like a new signing.

Alderweireld is arguably the best defender in the Premier League, but he barely featured last term, amid speculation over his future.

If Tottenham could keep hold of the Belgian it would be a huge boost to Pochettino’s side, and the Spurs boss’s comments would look far easier to back-up, if Alderweireld was to pen a new deal.
