Mauricio Pochettino has suggested to Football London that Moussa Sissoko has pushed himself to the front of the queue to be Tottenham Hotspur’s right-back.

Serge Aurier was red carded during Tottenham’s last Premier League match against Southampton, which forced Sissoko to slot in in defence.

Sissoko, who is on an £80,000-a-week contract (Spotrac), helped as Tottenham picked up a 2-1 win over the Saints.

And Pochettino has now suggested that he thinks Sissoko is Tottenham’s best option at right-back for his side’s match against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Pochettino said: “I think Moussa was very good playing one hour against Southampton with tough players like Boufal or Redmond. He did very well and that made me think a little bit that his option is bigger than another player.”

Right-back has been a problem position for Tottenham for a long time now.

Kieran Trippier’s form last season wasn’t particularly strong, but Tottenham sold him this summer without bringing in another natural right-back.

With Juan Foyth out injured, Pochettino has been forced to pick between Kyle Walker-Peters and Aurier so far this season, but neither have been particularly convincing.

The hope is now that Sissoko can step up and impress there, even though it is an unfamiliar position for him.

If Spurs can pick up a victory over Brighton it will help reduce the pressure on them after a heavy defeat against Bayern Munich.
