The left-back was used for most of England’s recent international fixtures.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has been commenting on the amount of football Danny Rose played with the England national team this week.

Rose played the full 90 minutes against Scotland and then for 78 minutes against Spain, which was clearly not in the best plans of Pochettino.

Pochettino admitted that it was not ideal for the Spurs left-back ahead of a Premier League fixture with West Ham this weekend, but that he could not complain about England’s decision to play him. Speaking to the press today, as documented by the Hampstead and Highgate Express:

“It is always a national team’s decision to select the player to play, I can say nothing about that. If the player is in condition to play, there is nothing to do.

“It’s true it wasn’t the best thing for him to play two games because against Spain he played 78 minutes and it was tough for him. The last moments were tough for him.”

He went on to discuss whether he had spoken to England boss Gareth Southgate about the player:

“Did I speak to Gareth Southgate about it? That is difficult because the question of the player depends on many things – they play for the qualification for the World Cup, or because Ryan Bertrand wasn’t available to play.

“In his mind maybe he wanted to play with Bertrand but Bertrand wasn’t available. I think he had some problems, I don’t know.”

Spurs were of course very grateful to England after they allowed Harry Kane to return early from international duty this week to build up his fitness but it seems the treatment of Rose has not gone down as well.

Spurs are struggling at left-back, with Ben Davies currently out injured with a twisted ankle, which is probably why Spurs felt that Rose should not have been used so much.

Aaron Cresswell eventually replaced Rose against Spain this week and the two face off in the Premier League this weekend. Spurs will wish that Cresswell and Rose had played 45 minutes a piece at Wembley.
