Tottenham Hotspur striker Marcus Edwards is set to miss out on playing against APOEL in the Champions League tomorrow.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has admitted at his latest press conference, which was covered by Football.London, that he made a mistake when he compared Tottenham Hotspur’s Marcus Edwards to Lionel Messi last season.

Pochettino raved about the attacker publicly last term, but Edwards, perhaps, hasn’t developed at the rate the Argentine boss was hoping.

Tottenham take on APOEL tomorrow in the Champions League, in what is a dead rubber for the North London side.

However, Pochettino has confirmed that Edwards won’t feature in the contest, as he does not feel he is ready for the first-team yet.

And Pochettino admits that he may have over-hyped the youngster, with what he said last season.

Pochettino said: “Maybe I made a mistake. I believed it was positive and he would take it in a positive way.

“When you are young, sometimes you need more time. We still trust in him that he can be important. It’s up to him to show us and everyone at Tottenham that he deserves it. He need to work hard, like different players. Never it’s easy the last steps.”

Edwards’ only senior Tottenham appearance to date came in the Europa League, when he featured in the EFL Cup against Gillingham.

Edwards has had problems with injury more recently, and that may have stunted his development slightly.

Edwards has scored seven goals and claimed four assists in 14 appearances for Tottenham’s development side in all competitions this season.
