Scottish football is frequently talked down by fans south of the border, but don’t tell former Celtic ace Victor Wanyama.

The current Tottenham star holds his old club in high regard, and talked up his new side as ‘up there’ with Celtic.

Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, Wanyama discussed Tottenham’s Champions League aims.

He said: “Hopefully we can be in a situation where we have more Champions League nights every season.

“I think this club is up there with Celtic. It’s a big club and you can feel that in the dressing room.

“We have young players who want to work hard and who are very ambitious, which is a good thing.”

Many players at top clubs in England would not bring Celtic into the discussion, but having played for both, Wanyama knows exactly how big the Scottish champions are.

Wanyama was part of the Celtic team which played against and beat Barcelona, even scoring in the famous victory in 2012 in front of 58,000 fans.

The midfielder was a key player for Celtic before leaving for Southampton, where he continued his development, earning his move to Spurs.

His previous Champions League experience means he is one of the few players in the Tottenham squad to have played in the competition, and could be vital over the final four matches of the group stages.
