Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Stefan de Vrij from Lazio in the January transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea have been linked with Stefan de Vrij. Earlier this month, La Repubblica credited Tottenham with an interest in the Lazio defender. The Italian publication also claimed that Chelsea want the centre-back (click here to read more).

With just a few hours left of the January transfer window, it will be interesting to see if any move transpires. Lazio are going strong in Serie A at the moment and are in the running for a top-three finish, and it is hard to envisage them losing a key player such as De Vrij.

However, every player has a price and Lazio have reportedly placed a high figure on the Netherlands international. Sport Mediaset claimed earlier this month that the Serie A outfit value De Vrij at €60million (£52million) (click here to read more). That is quite a lot of money!

Would Tottenham or Chelsea be willing to pay over £50m for the 24-year-old centre-back in the middle of the season? Probably not, especially as neither of the two North London clubs are exactly in need of a central defender.

True, there have been injury concerns at the back for Spurs this season, but they are not that grave that manager Mauricio Pochettino would have to spend a lot of money to bring in a player from another league.

Interestingly, De Vrij would have cost much less than £50m if Tottenham and Chelsea were looking at him when he was at Feyenoord. According to The Sun, Lazio paid the Dutch club just £6m in the summer of 2014 to secure the services of the defender.
