Pundit Alan McInally has slammed Eric Dier and feels the Tottenham Hotspur ace just isn’t a defender in any system.
Tottenham have given themselves plenty to do in the Champions League having lost 1-0 to AC Milan in the first leg of their last 16 clash on Tuesday.
Brahim Diaz’s early goal won it for Milan and the Italian side have the upper hand for a spot in the quarter-finals.
Tottenham just looked toothless at the San Siro and Antonio Conte will need much, much better in the second leg.
In truth, this Tottenham still looks a little stale.
There are a number of players featuring regularly for Tottenham who have maybe been at the club a little too long if anything.
Defender Dier may be one of them; whilst he’s been a constant in the heart of Tottenham’s back three, Spurs may need better if they are to go where Conte wants.

Alan McInally slams Tottenham ace Eric Dier
Dier hasn’t been terrible this season but Tottenham may need to seriously ask whether he is the quality of defender that can take the club forward.
Dier has been with Tottenham since 2014 now and it seems that he hasn’t impressed pundit Alan McInally at all in that time.
McInally spoke about Dier on Sky Sports on Tuesday night and he certainly didn’t hold back.
The Scot suggested that he doesn’t understand Dier playing as a centre back and has never understood it.
McInally believes that Dier is a holding midfield player at most and isn’t comfortable in either a back four or a back five.
McInally has added that he doesn’t think Dier will be at Tottenham much longer if he thinks his best position is centre back.
“Eric Dier, for me, is not a centre back,” said McInally. “I don’t get that. I just haven’t got it, so I think there’s a big problem defensively if Conte thinks he’s a centre back. If you’re going to play Eric Dier, he’s a holding midfield player tops, maximum.”
“He’s done as good as he can because I don’t think he knows where any danger is and I don’t like him in any back four or back three.”
“I’ve never spoken to Eric Dier, I couldn’t ask him and say ‘big man, tell me your favourite position, tell me where you want to play’. If I ask him that and he tells me ‘centre back’, then he’s not going to be at Spurs much longer,” he added.
