Who could have seen Tottenham goalkeeper winning international honours when he was at Southampton.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was a surprise name in the recent Argentina squad at the weekend.

Yesterday his dream became a reality as he underwent his first training session with the Albiceleste.

Gazzaniga is one of three Tottenham players in the squad, along with Erik Lamela and Juan Foyth.

The goalkeeper’s call up is the most remarkable of all three.

Little was expected of Gazzaniga when he signed for Tottenham from Southampton in 2017, for a fee cited by the Transfer League database at just £2.5 million.

Southampton fans were as shocked as anybody when Mauricio Pochettino swooped on his former side for the goalkeeper.

Saints supporters described the move as ‘good business’, with another calling him ‘shocking’ and ‘a League one standard’ stopper who was a ‘disaster waiting to happen.

After poor performances at St Mary’s and an error prone spell at Espanyol, it was a huge call for Spurs to bring him in.

The board backed Mauricio Pochettino’s judgement – it was a low risk move for a third choice, and Gazzaniga has seized every opportunity he has been given.

Signed as third choice, he was not even expected to play. Thanks to fortune and good performances, he has now been elevated to second in the pecking order.

Few Tottenham fans will begrudge him his big opportunity. At 26-years-old he is just getting started with this new phase of his career.
