Asoro claimed he held talks with Tottenham this summer, before leaving Sunderland.
Tottenham Hotspur have surely dodged a bullet in the signing of attacker Joel Asoro after he told Swedish media that he and Spurs failed to come to an agreement this summer.
Asoro, 19, told AftonBladet that he and Spurs failed to agree terms as the striker wanted guarantees over playing time, only for the north London club to inform the Swedish star that there would be no guarantees.
Asoro, who has since joined Championship club Swansea City from Sunderland, said: “We sat talking to Tottenham and they said they could not promise anything about playing time, I felt I could not make that choice.”
But Spurs will be confident that they have avoided signing a flop as the Swede struggles with new club Swansea, despite being given a regular run in the side under new manager Graham Potter.
Indeed, the 14-time Sweden under-21 international has been used six times by the Welsh outfit, but has only managed to score one goal for the side relegated from the Premier League last season.
Asoro has failed to create any goals either, despite being deployed from out wide in the majority of his appearances and he was even dropped to the bench in Swansea’s last game against Millwall – remaining an unused substitute.
Spurs have plenty of options in attack, with Son Heung-min set to return from international duty with South Korea alongside the likes of a rejuvenated Lucas Moura, as well as Erik Lamela, Moussa Sissoko, Christian Eriksen and more.
There is no doubt that Asoro boasts plenty of potential at just 19, but it is questionable whether the Swedish star is good enough for a club like Tottenham and Mauricio Pochettino.
Certainly, his start at Swansea will give Spurs confidence that they were right not to offer his assurances.
