The Tottenham playmaker has had a tricky start to the season, while Spurs themselves have not been at their best so far.
Tottenham Hotspur cult hero Gus Poyet has claimed that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has a “big decision to make” regarding Christian Eriksen, in conversation with talkSPORT.
The 27-year-old, who was linked with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Arena in the summer, has had an indifferent start to the 2019-20 season, with half of his eight appearances for Spurs coming via the substitutes’ bench.
Eriksen’s poor form has been one of several frustrating points for Spurs fans, on top of the team having had a lacklustre start to the new campaign, with two wins, two draws and two defeats from their opening six Premier League games.
In addition, Tottenham relinquished a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Olympiacos in their Champions League group opener, and in midweek, they were knocked out of the League Cup by League Two Colchester United.
Poyet believes that Tottenham will recover from their disappointing start, although he added that Pochettino should consider giving the under-performing Eriksen a break to rediscover his best form – or seek to restore confidence in him by utilising him week in, week out.
“I think it’s going to happen,” the Uruguayan told talkSPORT. “I think they’ve got the squad and the way of playing, it’s just a matter of picking the players who are better at the moment. Sometimes players go through bad times and difficult moments for whatever reason, and it looks to me like Eriksen, one of the best players at Spurs, is not having a great time at the moment.
“It’s a big decision to make, but you’ve got two options; you give him confidence he needs and you play him week in, week out, or you give him one week to go to Dubai and forget about football. But Mauricio knows his players well, so I’m sure he will make the right decision.”
