Tottenham won’t be signing Gelson Martins with the Monaco winger now poised to stay put beyond tonight’s transfer deadline.
Spurs went into deadline day looking for a winger with Bryan Gil seemingly heading off on loan to Valencia once again.
Leeds United’s Daniel James and Wolves ace Adama Traore were both linked but it looks like neither will be joining Tottenham.
Gil’s move to Spain now appears to be off because Tottenham don’t have a winger coming in, but they did consider a move earlier today.
Tottenham won’t be signing Gelson Martins
Reports from Sky Sports earlier today suggested that Tottenham were discussing making a late move for Monaco winger Gelson Martins.
Martins, 27, was expected to become a star after shining with Sporting as a youngster.
A move to Atletico Madrid materialised in 2018 but he was shipped off to Monaco within just a matter of months.
The Portuguese wide man has blistering pace but his end product maybe hasn’t been at the level Tottenham need.
Martins has managed just 16 goals and 14 assists in 118 games for Monaco.
For context, Dejan Kulusevski has already notched six goals and 10 assists in just 25 games for Tottenham.
Get French Football News now claim Martins will not be moving before tonight’s deadline and will be staying at Monaco.
Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports has since added that Tottenham weren’t convinced enough by Martins to make a late push for his signature.
Martins may have been a speedy option off the bench whilst adding depth on both the left and right flanks, but Tottenham seemingly didn’t think they were that desperate for a deal.
It now looks like Gil will be staying at Tottenham after all, and we will see just how much football he receives.
The Spaniard has played just 181 minutes across eight appearances under Antonio Conte and will now be upping for an increased role.
