Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Mabbutt has given his thoughts on the team’s heroic Champions League semi-final second leg win over Ajax.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Matthijs de Ligt’s goal on five minutes and Hakim Ziyech’s 35th-minute contribution left Spurs with a seemingly insurmountable mountain to climb.

However, that is just what they did, as Lucas Moura scored twice within five minutes in the second half before adding a third deep into injury time to secure an aggregate scoreline of 3-3 and therefore progress on away goals.

Mabbutt, a former Spurs captain, made more than 600 appearances for the North Londoners over 16 years, and won the 1984 UEFA Cup and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley with them in 1991.

As such, he has experienced some of the greatest moments in the club’s history, and he made a bold statement in saying that the game on Wednesday ranked right up there with them.

“European competitions are always extremely special,” Mabbutt told BBC Sport. “There have been some great nights over the years for the club.

“But to get through to the Champions League final in the way we did it after a season in the Champions League where we’ve been written off on three or four occasions. It was an amazing night for the club, an historic night which is up there with some of the greatest ever victories the club’s ever had.”

Tottenham’s win came a day after Liverpool had secured a similarly dramatic result, overturning a 3-0 first-leg deficit away at Barcelona to win 4-0 at Anfield, booking their place in the final in Madrid on Saturday 1 June.
