Real Madrid general director Jose Angel Sanchez has told Croatian newspaper Sportske Novosti that Tottenham had a bid rejected for Mateo Kovacic in the summer – and Spurs fans are desperate to see their club try again.

Spurs made just a handful of signings in the summer but failed to add talent to their midfield, instead signing goalkeeper Paulo Gazzanigga, defenders Serge Aurier, Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez and striker Fernando Llorente.

However, it seems they failed in their bid to sign Kovacic, with Sanchez stating Spurs made an offer.

“Kovacic is not for sale, we will never sell him!” Sanchez told Sportske Novosti. “If there are any offers for him in January, we will reject them. Last summer there were a lot of offers and questions about him.

“Juventus and AC Milan didn’t send offers, but Inter must have sent one. There was one from England, it was Tottenham.”

The 23-year-old was out of favour with the Galacticos last season and remains down the pecking order under Zinedine Zidane’s stewardship this time around, but has been sidelined of late with a knee injury.

The 34-time Croatia international finally made his comeback from the injury, which he picked up in a La Liga clash against Levante on September 9, during a 2-2 draw against minnows CF Fuenlabrada in the Copa Del Rey.

Spurs are in desperate need of a new spark after picking up just one point from a possible nine, following losses to Leicester City and Arsenal as well as a draw against West Brom.

Spurs fans believe the former Juventus midfielder could be the man to rejig Mauricio Pochettino’s side if the north Londoners go back in for the playmaker, with one fan claiming he could be “a successor for Mousa Dembele”.
