The match between Women’s Super League debutants Spurs Women and their North London rivals is a friendly – some Tottenham fans aren’t too keen on that term though.

Tottenham Hotspur Women will face North London rivals Arsenal Women in a pre-season friendly this summer, Spurs have announced on their official website.

The Lilywhites secured promotion to the Women’s Super League for the first time in their history as runners-up in the FA Women’s Championship, thanks to their 1-1 draw at Aston Villa at the start of May.

Spurs, who needed a point to go up, took the lead through Jessica Naz, and even though Amy West levelled for the claret and blue side, the North Londoners secured the all-important draw (BBC Sport).

The Football Association went on to award Tottenham the licence required to play in the WSL on 10 May (official website), and as such they are now preparing for their first season in the top flight.

As stated on their official website, Tottenham will take on their bitter local rivals – who won the Women’s Super League last season – at Boreham Wood’s Meadow Park, on Sunday 25 August, 2pm kickoff.

Here is how some Spurs fans reacted to the announcement on Twitter:
