The Tottenham U23s defender did not feature on Friday, leaving some Spurs fans wondering whether he could be in Mauricio Pochettino’s team against Newcastle.

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to comment on Japhet Tanganga’s absence from the Under-23s squad for their Premier League 2 game against Derby County.
Quite a few supporters have suggested that the 20-year-old defender – who is yet to make a first-team appearance according to Transfermarkt – is perhaps being considered for Mauricio Pochettino’s squad this weekend.
Jan Vertonghen is yet to feature for Spurs in the Premier League this term, having missed out on the first-team squad against Aston Villa and only making the bench at Manchester City.
There have been reports of differences in opinion between the Belgian centre-back and his manager (Daily Mail), so it remains to be seen whether he will be picked against Newcastle.
However, the absence of Tanganga from the Tottenham U23s team sheet before the Rams loss did get some Spurs fans wondering whether he could be drafted in to face the Magpies.
Here are just some of the comments on social media:
It’s worth noting that Tanganga is listed as a “powerful right-sided centre-half” on his Tottenham profile page, while Vertonghen is left-footed – were Tanganga to feature for Pochettino, would he replace Vertonghen on the subs’ bench or Davinson Sanchez in the starting XI?
At present, this is all just mere speculation, and we can look for clues here and there but, until the team news is announced at 3:30pm on Sunday – or alternatively Pochettino clearly states who will feature or not in his presser – we will not know for sure.
