Spurs paid tribute to their cult hero, who lit up White Hart Lane between 2006 and 2008, with a message and goal compilation on their Twitter channel.
A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have been commenting on Twitter about the news that Spurs cult hero Dimitar Berbatov has announced his retirement from professional football.
The 38-year-old, who ends his career as Bulgaria’s record goalscorer, joined Tottenham from Bayer Levekusen in 2006, winning the League Cup and making upwards of 100 appearances for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt).
Berbatov, who began his career at CSKA Sofia, also played for Manchester United, joining the Old Trafford side in the summer of 2008, as well as Fulham, Monaco, PAOK and Kerala Blasters after leaving the Red Devils.
Bulgaria’s record goalscorer wrote on Instagram (as quoted by Evening Standard): “Someone told me I need to say something, and seeing that people were asking me, especially back home, I need to give a farewell message. My last game was more then one year ago, so I think its the right time now to stop, and its long overdue.”

Berbatov was also named Bulgaria’s Footballer of the Year seven times between 2004 and 2010.
