Tottenham Hotspur kicked off the post-Jose Mourinho era on Wednesday evening with a 2-1 home win over Southampton.

Ryan Mason took charge for the first time after Mourinho lost his job on Monday, but Spurs were pretty dire in the first half.

Danny Ings fired the Saints ahead, but Spurs were much better once Gareth Bale curled home a delightful equaliser.

Son Heung-min had a goal ruled out, but he did get the winner from the penalty spot after Sergio Reguilon had been fouled by Moussa Djenepo.

Tottenham saw out the game to claim a 2-1 victory, and will now look to kick on with Mourinho gone and the Carabao Cup final to come this weekend.

Some players turned in improved displays with Mason at the helm, and left back Sergio Reguilon may well fall into that category.

The Spaniard had been struggling defensively in the final stages of Mourinho’s reign, but he came back strong against the Saints, posing a threat going forward as he not only won the game-winning penalty but also had an assist for Son’s disallowed goal.

Reguilon has now been hailed for his display, branding him ‘superb’ and ‘brilliant’, even picking him out as man of the match.

Others think the real Reguilon showed up in the second half, and believe he is now back following Mourinho’s departure.
